As the cost of living continues to pressure households, many feel the crunch. However, Hilton's new study this month suggests that consumers plan to spend more on travel in 2024. How? By reducing other areas of their spending to make leisure travel a priority.
Gen Z and Millennials are taking it a step further, confirming that they also plan to spend more on travel in 2024.
Sustainable tourism has been a big trend in 2023, and that will continue into 2024. Today’s tourists are conscious of the impact their travels have on the planet. However, on the contrary, luxury travel continues to exhibit resilience, emerging as an outperforming segment within the broader travel sector, even amid fluctuating market conditions.
The polar opposite of the gluttony of traditional inclusive holidays, wellness getaways are emerging as a prominent trend too. Another growing trend in travel is the pursuit of personalised experiences that cater to the unique desires and preferences of each traveller.
So here are my predictions for popular travel trends for 2024:
Adelaide Hills, Australia as an alternative to Blue Hills National Park, Australia.
Bodrum, Turkey as an alternative to Istanbul, Turkey.
Cervo, Italy as an alternative to Amalfi, Italy.
St. Kitts & Nevis as an alternative to the Virgin Islands.
Niseko, Japan as an alternative to Sapporo, Japan.
San Miguel De Allende, Mexico as an alternative to Riviera Maya, Mexico.
Santa Fe, New Mexico as an alternative to Sedona, Arizona.
The Seychelles as an alternative to The Maldives.
Udaipur, India as an alternative to Agra, India.
Zermatt, Switzerland as an alternative to St. Moritz, Switzerland
Destination Dupes Are NEW The Travel Trend
Another day, another novelty the kids are obsessed with on TikTok. This time it’s “dupes,” or—translated for anybody born in the previous century—a contemporary take on the “Do This, Not That” trend in travel.
The idea of a travel “dupe,” or duplicate, is to provide an alternative destination to a popular hotspot. Skip Destination X because it’s too crowded/expensive/smelly/scummy/dirty and visit Destination Y instead. It’s definitely not a new trend, but it’s taking on new life on TikTok.
For example, if you’re planning a romantic escape in 2024, you might want to check out the gorgeous Greek island of Paros rather than heading to a better-known (often overcrowded) spot like Santorini. If there’s a city break on the cards, the destination dupes trend encourages branching out somewhere like the capital of Sicily, Palermo, instead of European hotspot Lisbon, or switching up London for the vibrant charm of Liverpool.
Here are some Destination Dupe ideas for 2024:
Perth – destination dupe for Sydney
Curaçao – destination dupe for St. Martin
Quebec City – destination dupe for Geneva
Memphis – destination dupe for Nashville
Taipei – destination dupe for Seoul
Sapporo – destination dupe for Zermatt
Pattaya – destination dupe for Bangkok
Wherever you plan to head for 2024 make sure you take care of your mental health and take time out for yourself even if it’s only in the UK, because everyone needs a break once in a while and we don’t need to get caught up in finding the perfect life as pictured on social media channels.
